For baby’s wellbeing:
It is now thought that before the age of six months babies lack the barrier that prevents blood-borne toxins entering the brain. There is concern that through early exposure to chemicals a toxic cocktail is accumulating in children.
Studies show that pesticides are among the five worst environmental threats to children's health. Bamboo is an eco friendly fibre requiring no chemical additives to grow.
Bamboo is hypoallergenic, absorbent and fast drying; pure bamboo can dry twice as fast and is three times more antibacterial than cotton, with an added 30% improvement of deodorisation. Studies have shown that even after 50 washes the fabric still retains its antibacterial properties.
In 2004 Greenpeace tested a number of children’s products and found phthalates, organotins and alkylphenols-all chemicals labeled by campaigners as ‘hormone disrupters’ – in children’s pyjamas, underwear and t-shirts. By purchasing organic, you are not only keeping your baby safe but the planet as well.
Bamboo has fantastic antistatic properties (12 x more than cotton) and is 3-4 times more absorbent with a feel similar to that of cashmere or silk. The fabric is machine washable and is also resistant to pilling and shrinkage making it incredibly easy to take care of.
Bamboo fabric is UV protective, blocking out 98% of harmful UV rays and has amazing thermo regulating properties keeping your baby up to 2 degrees cooler in the summer and with its porous nature, it traps air to keep baby warmer in the colder months.
For the environment:
Bamboo is a naturally organic green fabric requiring no pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers, requires very little water and can survive drought conditions.
It is a sustainable and renewable resource as the bamboo plant is self replenishing, thus eliminating the need for replanting.
Planting bamboo can help reduce the level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and releases a significant amount of oxygen (35% more than trees).
Bamboo can be 100% biodegraded in soil. The decomposition process does not cause any pollution to the environment.
In comparison:
Cotton is often marketed as a natural fibre but with its not so friendly impact on the environment and the amount of chemicals used, it is far from being the ideal choice that so many of us believe it to be (especially for babies).
Crisp white cotton has an undeserved reputation as a wholesome, natural fabric. In truth, it couldn’t be more saturated by some of the world’s most dangerous pesticides.
The UN estimates that it takes 760 litres of water to ‘grow’ each t-shirt plus litres of pesticides and synthetic dyes in manufacture.
Cotton uses more insecticides than any other crop in the world and reportedly there are three million pesticide poisonings per year and 20,000 unintentional deaths. Aldicarb, an acutely toxic pesticide used on cotton crops, is classified by the WHO (World Health Organisation) as “extremely hazardous”. One drop is sufficient to kill an adult male. Yet one million kilos of Aldicarb was applied to cotton crops in the USA in 2003.
A 2004 study conducted by researchers in the Tech University of Lodz, Poland has shown that hazardous pesticides applied during cotton production were also detected on the cotton clothing.
Common Questions:
How can I be sure the bamboo fibre is skin-friendly?
All of the fibre produced at the facility in China is Oeko-Tex 100 certified. This certifies that the finished fibre has been tested for any chemicals that may be harmful to a person’s health and has been found to contain no trace chemicals that pose any health threat whatsoever. After our garment factory spin the fibre into yarn, knot the yarn into fabric, and dye the fabric, we again have the fabric Oeko-Tex 100 certified.
Is the bamboo you use grown organically?
To strictly control the quality of raw material, the bamboo production facility has built its own bamboo plantation in Sichaun Province, China and keeps strict control over it. The bamboo is grown in accordance to the international organic standard of OCIA/NOP, so as to ensure each stalk is of 100% natural growth and without any chemical pesticides.
Which dyes do you use?
Our line is mainly produced in unbleached natural white. However, where dyes are used, we use azo free reactive dyes for the fabric and non-plasticised dyes for our prints. These are both the best quality and most environmentally friendly man-made dyes available. Their colours are brighter and richer and provide excellent colorfast properties. They contain no heavy metals or other known toxic substances and meet all European Union criteria for being an eco-friendly pigment.
Do you use nickel free press studs?
Yes. As nickel is one of the most common contact allergens, all our press studs are nickel free.
Is your garment factory environmentally responsible?
The factory we use manufactures bamboo fibre using a closed loop system (no harmful impact on the environment), strictly adhering to ISO9000 and ISO14001 regulations.
Is the manufacturer ethically responsible?
Yes, the facility is SA8000 certified. SA8000 sets out provisions for issues such as trade union rights, use of child labour, working hours, fair pay etc and we have personally been to the site to witness this for ourselves.
Is the organic cotton certified and where is it sourced?
Yes, our organic cotton is OCIA and Control Union certifications, certified and is sourced in China and Turkey.
What other ways is Ezy Peazy Babywear an eco-friendly choice?
We use recycled paper board for our hang tags and business cards. We use limited packaging when necessary using recyclable bags. We offset our website emissions and donate a portion of all proceeds to various environmental and humanitarian charities.
